Questions
While users interact with AI chatbots conversationally, the AI systems themselves perform web searches using traditional keywords to gather information before creating a response. This means the same keywords that drive organic search visibility also influence AI-generated answers. By tracking keywords, we can:
- Connect performance to market demand: Google Search volumes for keywords remain the best available proxy for market demand on a given topic.
- Maintain consistent measurement: It allows for a consistent performance measurement methodology across both traditional SEO and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
Future-proof strategy: It enables teams to continue optimizing for Google Search, which has an immediate business impact, while simultaneously measuring and experimenting with AI search performance.
We do not use OpenAI API to track AI search presence. Instead, we source our data from a trusted third-party Data Partner that simulates real user interactions by triggering the search function within ChatGPT. The responses are non-personalised, unpaid, and localized to the target tracking location. This setup ensures that the results accurately reflect what a typical user would see in a neutral search scenario, giving you reliable insights into how your content appears within AI-powered search environments.
The “AI search column” in the dashboard indicates the presence of your brand in the response of the first LLM integrated by SEOmonitor, which is ChatGPT.
Yes, SEOmonitor monitors brand presence in AI-generated content. This begins with the brand associated with the website you are tracking and extends to identifying other brands mentioned in the AI’s output, allowing for competitive analysis.
All AI data will be available for all languages that SEOmonitor supports.
To balance accuracy with efficiency, searches are performed once a week for each keyword. While a single search provides a snapshot, tracking this data weekly reveals trends and consistency over time. If a brand is consistently mentioned week after week, it indicates a stable presence in the AI’s responses for that query.
SEOmonitor checks for AI search presence using keywords that are already being tracked in your campaigns. These core keywords are generally sufficient for performance reporting, as they help gauge how ChatGPT perceives your brand’s authority, identifying the topics where your brand is mentioned and those where it isn’t. Fan-out queries can offer additional insights for optimization, and the request to surface them is added to our roadmap.
Yes, tracking for Google’s AI Mode (Gemini) is planned for a future (soon) release.
Yes, this is possible through several methods:
- High-level trends: The main dashboard provides charts for AIO Visibility and AIO Prevalence, showing trends over your selected timeframe.
- Granular data: On a keyword level, you can track the historical presence of an AIO.
Bulk data: To get a list of all keywords that triggered an AI Overview within a specific past timeframe, you can use the SEOmonitor API.
The SEOmonitor forecasting model considers the impact of SERP features on the click-through rate (CTR) through a metric called Percentage of clicks. When an AIO is present for a keyword, the model reduces the forecasted “percentage of clicks” available for the traditional organic results, leading to a more realistic traffic projection.
